Pack Wars 101
I have been planning this Pack Wars 101 page for a couple days, but when I received an email from Charlie today asking: “Could you explain how pack wars works?” I decided to get on the ball and write…
The Official Guide To Pack Wars – How To Dominate Your Competition!
So, this guide will a bit informal… I will walk you through the basics first:
- What is a pack war?
- How do you pack war?
- What decides who wins the pack war?
- What if I hit a monster card worth millions?
- How can you participate?
What is a pack war?
A pack war is a friendly competition between two card collectors. It can be any kind of card, but sports cards and gaming cards are used the most. They challenge each other using two packs of cards. The winner keeps both packs and every card included – base, inserts, and hits.
How do you pack war?
First you must select the packs you are going to use. Second you must decide what criteria will be used to judge. Third you open your packs. The person with the best single card wins.
When we are doing the pack wars online, Houdini will show all cards live on video.
What decides who wins the pack war?
Anything you want! For simplicity’s sake, we often use high card or low card. This means that the highest numbered card or lowest numbered card (depending on which is chosen), will win both packs.
However, you can use any criteria you like. There are many stats on the back of a baseball card and you can use any of them that are available on your card. Highest career batting average? Lowest ERA? Tallest player? Oldest player?
What if I hit a monster card worth millions?
I was actually very worried about the day that someone pulled a huge card and then lost it in a pack war. Will that person be upset? (Um yeah.) What if it’s a DNA relic from Allen & Ginter or the mythical Longoria Superfractor rookie autograph from 2006 Draft?
So, here is the rule. I will fan your cards and allow you to see any major hit before you war. If there is a card worth hundreds or even thousands, you can pay the price for the entire box. You keep that card. The person you were warring gets the rest of your pack. Everyone else gets to war with the packs from that box for free.
Here is an example: We pack war with a box of 2006 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects at $3 a pack. Your pack has a Longoria auto (color or superfractor or even just the base auto). You decide you do not want to risk that card. I will charge you $72 (24 packs x $3). You get the Longoria. Your opponent gets his pack and the rest of yours. Everyone else that has purchased a pack in the box (including your opponent), gets to play for free.
How can I participate in a pack war?
Now that is easy. We have a pack war session on ustream every Wednesday night at 9pm EST.
You will need to join the club in order to participate – you can see the sign up in the top right sidebar.
Then you just show up to my ustream channel that is located here: Pack Wars on Ustream.
